choosing your best hair color

Time to switch up your look? Figuring out your next hair color is never an easy feat. What to consider before deciding your next shade? Here are a few factors that can help determine what will be the most flattering for your complexion.

SKIN UNDERTONES
Your skin tone contains underlying pigments. If you were born with black or brown hair, you're likely to have warmer, earthy undertones in your skin like brown, gold, orange or orange-based red. If you were born with blonde hair, you usually have cooler skin undertones like green, pink, blue or blue-based red.

Those with warmer undertones in their skin usually look better with  warmer hair colors. Try a golden blonde or honey brown. Those with cooler undertones in their skin usually look better with cooler hair colors, such as  black, ash blonde or auburn brown.

A good way to figure out your skin tone is to consider the makeup you are already using. If you are still unsure, try inspecting a vein in your arm under natural light. If it looks green, then you have warm tones, if it appears blue then you have cool-toned skin. Our professional staff of colorists can assist you if you are still unsure.

HAIR PIGMENTATION
When you change your hair color with permanent hair dye,  the outer color is lifted, revealing  the natural underlying pigments, or highlights in your hair. Think about the color that the sun turns your hair in the summer. Those tones are what come out naturally. Stick with them when you dye your hair for your most natural, long lasting color.

EYE COLOR
Your eye color can also help you determine a suitable hair color. People with hazel, green, and brown eyes can go for warm overtones in haircolor. Golden blond, golden brown, and burgundy look beautiful with warmer tones.  If you have blue or gray eyes,  go for cool overtones in hair color. Platinum, ash blond, ash brown, and blond colors will suit you wonderfully. Think about what colors dominate your wardrobe. If there is a specific color that you adore wearing, because it compliments your skin tone and/or eye color, it will most likely be a beautiful hair color.

AGE
Most of the time, the hair color your rocked in your childhood is what looks best on you as an adult. But that's not always the case. As we age, our skin changes, so reverting to your younger self's hue is not always a surefire solution. Sometimes your hair will becomes a bit greyer, and other times pinker. As you get older, consider going softer with your hair color because it will reflect on the skin, especially in the bright summer months.

All of that being said... Rules ARE made to be broken! If there is a hue you've been dying to try and it makes you feel beautiful, GO FOR IT! Looking at photos of yourself as a child is a great way to find a flattering hair color. But above all else, have fun with it! The color you've always wanted but maybe thought you couldn't pull off could be within your reach... Just wear it with confidence.
